CHADRON – Leah Guerrero of Greeley, Colorado, is the Chadron State College Project Strive/TRiO October Student of the Month.

Guerrero arrived at CSC in the fall of 2016. She said she chose CSC because of its affordability, her scholarships and the location of the school because it is close to home and her sister, who lives in Ogallala, Nebraska.

Guerrero said she likes the overall environment of the school and the events sponsored by Residence Life Association and clubs.

Guerrero, a criminal justice major with an emphasis in forensic science, said she hopes to apply her CSC education and earn a career with the Wyoming State Patrol office or a law enforcement forensic department.

“My end goal is to work for the FBI in forensics,” Guerrero said.

Guerrero said classes taught by Dr. James Wada, associate professor of Justice Studies, are her favorite.

Wada said Guerrero is a pleasure to have in class.

“Leah is witty, energetic, sarcastic and smart,” Wada said. “She makes classes unpredictable and fun.”

Beyond the classroom, Guerrero is involved in Zeta Alpha Kappa, where she serves as the club’s CAB representative, and Student Senate as the Andrews Dorm Senator.

Project Strive/TRiO was one of the first groups Guerrero joined. Guerrero said she was active in the college prep program AVID in high school and her mom thought Project Strive/TRiO would be a good program for her.

Guerrero said one of her favorite aspects of Project Strive/TRiO is having her own resource center for textbooks and laptops. She also said she enjoys the events the program hosts, specifically the holiday cookie decorating event.

Jen Schaer, Director of Project Strive/TRiO, serves as Guerrero’s main adviser and said she is a great addition to the program.

“Leah loves life and shares this love with others,” Schaer said. “She has encouraged others to join Strive and will bring those that are interested in, so that they can fill out an application.”

Beyond her CSC obligations, Guerrero stays busy by working at Walmart and Northwest Community Action Partnership, where she works in the outreach office helping prepare the food pantries the organization offers.
